Did you know that the history that everyone thinks that they remember about the start of Radio Caroline in 1964, was written by Ian Cowper Ross, and that it was first published in 1990?
Did you know that out of all of the many, many books that have flooded the market about the start of Radio Caroline in 1964, all of them emerged after 1990, with the exception of Venmore-Rowland and Paul Harris' books? Do you know of any other exceptions that refer to a drive in an MG belonging to Ian Cowper Ross on his way to see his father, with Ronan O'Rahilly at the wheel, Chris Moore in the front passenger seat, and Ian Cowper Ross in the back seat? That infamous drive is the one that Ian Cowper Ross referred to in his book 'Rocking the Boat', which some say is a novel. But BBC-TV and its 'Arena' production team allowed Ian Cowper Ross to restate it as fact. He did that on television, on BBC television. Then, Ray Clark interviewed Ian Cowper Ross and he included that material in his own book, and then Ray Clark published the full interview in which Ian Cowper Ross repeated his story, and of course, Ian Cowper Ross assured everyone that it was true. Lots and lots of people have all accepted a tale about Ronan O'Rahilly addressing the father of Ian Cowper Ross as 'Jimmy', even though in real life the first name of Ian Cowper Ross' father is Charles. A clipped version of that would be Charlie, just as Jimmy refers to James. After that, lots and lots of people tried to guess who Jimmy Ross is. Of course there was no such person. Some said he was related to MacFisheries, others to Ross Frozen Foods, and some to the CarPhone Warehouse. Some said he was a banker in London. But they were all wrong because he worked for Jensen Cars as a salesman and Charles Ross actually worked for John Sheffield in a subsidiary capacity. In fact, Ian Cowper Ross took one of those expensive Jensens when he was a teenager and crashed it head-on into a bus. It landed him in hospital where he almost lost a foot, and then it landed him in court for reckless driving. There is so much to tell you about the real Ian Cowper Ross and about the real Radio Caroline, and so far no one has told you anything about either Ian Cowper Ross or Radio Caroline that is true. Well, there is one group, but I won't mention them here, because I know that you don't like them or pay attention to anything they say. However, without the help of the British Broadcasting Corporation who turned a 1990 book of fiction into a 1991 documentary fact, none of the mythology now in circulation would have been possible. Think about that, and the fact that something calling itself 'Radio Caroline' now has a license to broadcast which was issued in the name of the British Crown; the same institution that also controls the BBC! If that doesn't make you wonder about why the British Crown became the friend of those who wanted to keep the mythology of Radio Caroline alive, well, nothing will. This is not for them. It is for everyone who still has the ability to think intelligently; ask questions, and not believe everything they read, see, or hear. Cheerio until next time. |
